Revise CATW Practice 2. Post the revision as "Blog 11." Do not change the one you have already posted before. Make sure in your revision that your body paragraphs have adequate downshifting

Feedback on downshifting

Choose another student in the class to pair up with. Read their "Blog 10" and then write a couple of paragraphs as comments to the blog on these issues:
1. Does the essay do a good job offering a summary of the article?
2. Does the essay have a thesis?
3. Is there adequate downshifting in each of the body paragraphs? What level? Give evidence
4. Is there a good essay structure--one introductory paragraph, 2-3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion?
5. Is the thesis supported by the evidence?

Post your paragraphs as a comment to the writer's original post

Blog 5: “Historical and Personal Illusions.”

In class we discussed historical situations where people believed in a truth they later found was untrue--meaning where they were chained to an illusion similar to the state of the chained people in Plato's cave. We also discussed situations in people's everyday lives where this is the case.

Now it is time to discuss where you are in relation to Plato's cave, and/or also where you have been. Is there something you used to believe in and no longer do (not something obvious like Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy)? if so, what changed your beliefs? Are there some beliefs you are currently questioning but have not yet rejected? And are there some truths many people accept but that you suspect are another illusion, an instance of people being inside the cave? Write a short essay of a few paragraphs answering these questions, and be specific with your examples.

Review Summary of The Allegory of the Cave

In this assignment you will review a classmate's post summarizing the allegory of the cave
Go to the classmate's blog, read the post and then click on comments. Post your response there.
You will need to be logged in to do that. As always, write on word first so you do not lose your text.

In your comments you will offer a review of their summary answering the following important questions:

1. Is the main idea (thesis) of the passage clearly and correctly stated?
2. Are the important supporting ideas stated correctly and fully?
3. Are all (or nearly all) unimportant ideas excluded?
4. Is the summary in the writer’s own words?
5. Is the summary written with few grammar/spelling/style errors?
6. Does the summary retain the sense and organization of the original passage?
7. Is personal opinion included in the summary?

Your review should start by addressing these questions. Don't assume they know which question you are talking about--write complete sentences about each point (for instance, "a summary is supposed to be in the writer's own words but you use quotes from the original when you say ..." Also address your overall impression of their work on this summary and cover BOTH the positive and the problematic aspects you saw. Think of this writing as addressing yourself at some point: how would you like someone to critique you? I am sure you would like someone to praise what you did well and offer helpful feedback on what you need to work on without making you feel like a failure. Have fun interacting with your classmates and keep in mind  you will also be getting feedback from other students on your own blogs.
